Description
In November 2008, Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty (TAEDP) coordinated a seminar “New Perspectives on the Death Penalty”. Specialists knowledgeable about both theory and practice were invited from Germany and Taiwan. Experiences in Taiwan and Germany were discussed with recommendations proposed. With assistance from both Deutsches Institut Taipei and Angle Publishing Co., “New Perspectives on Death Penalty” which is a complete collection of discussions and theses were published in June 2009. It is not only a collection of theses from the specialists but also a redacted minute of proceedings. It aims at inspiring new perspectives from the aspects of social security, the reformation of correctional system and victim protection while guiding readers to rethink the issue of death penalty. The abolition of death penalty is the long-term goal of this book.

This is the first book by TAEDP. During the book launch conference honoured guests are invited to introduce this book. The workshop “News Perspectives on Death Penalty – Drawing a Blueprint for the Abolition of Death Penalty in Taiwan”. We invite you to join us along with invited specialists to ponder the following issues,

1.  Should the death penalty be replaced by life imprisonment with the possibility of parole?
2.  Should Sicherungsverwahrung be considered as an alternative to death penalty in Taiwan? What is its(Sicherungsverwahrung) implication?
3.  Besides moratorium of death penalty, how can the Taiwan government be active in formulating policies? With the ratification of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), how are we to implement it effectively through legislative process, including the protection of victims?
4.  With death penalty, the number of crime recommittals indicated the ineffectiveness of death penalty. How can we help shape public discourse on the issue of death penalty in light of the aforementioned fact?
