Purpose
The public's impression of death row prisoners often remains at the crime scenes described in newspapers and media, as well as their worst appearance. Through the letters, artwork, and interviews with family members and friends, the exhibition "Not Who We Were: Each and Every Day Behind Bars" allows the audience to understand that the death row prisoners are also humans with feelings and thoughts. A full-scale model cell and daily routines enable the audience to experience the constrained and inhumane living condition where the prisoners have to live in for over 20 years. In addition, this exhibition also presents the stories of the wrongfully-convicted in Taiwan and the people facing the death penalty in Singapore to show the arbitrary and unjust nature of capital punishment.
Taiwan, like most countries in the world, is moving towards the goal of abolishing the death penalty. The Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty, in joint efforts with other NGOs such as Amnesty International and Judicial Reform Foundation, organizes this exhibition as a more elaborate version of the “Not Who We Were” held in 2020. With expansive scopes and thorough discussions, we hope the public understand the death penalty has negative impact on society and we should join the world and move toward the abolition.
